PARENTAL QUESTIONS, CONCERNS, OR INQUIRIES
The District values open and direct communication with parents. Parents are encouraged to address their questions or concerns to the person or office most directly involved in the matter.s resolution. When subsequent conversation is required, the customary "chain of command" should be followed (e.g. teacher to principal to appropriate central office administrator to Board of Education). Those involved in addressing matters that are raised are committed to responding in an appropriate and timely manner. Although there may be specific matters that would be addressed in a manner other than is prescribed below, parental and community inquiries should generally be directed as follows: Staff Directory
- A child's teacher should be the initial point of contact when parents have a question or concern about specific issues such as student progress, grade level or subject area curriculum, classroom practices or expectations, the instructional program, student assessment, student discipline or other matters related to classroom activities or organization. In the case of a special education student, the general education teacher should be the first contact for parents. The parents should contact their child's special education case manager if the general education teacher is not able to address their question.
- A child's coach should be the initial point of contact when parents have a question or concern about specific issues such as playing times, team rules, schedule conflicts, or other matters related directly to the sport or team. If parents have athletic questions or concerns that cannot be answered by a coach, the Athletic Director (Rob White, 734.429.8042) would be the next point of contact.
- The school principal would be the appropriate person to contact initially when a question or concern exists relative to school rules or regulations, student placement practices, student registration, parent participation and involvement, student records, special programs and related student services, building goals, other matters related to school-wide activities or organization or any building-specific issues.
- The Office of Instruction (Betty Rosen-Leacher, Assistant Superintendent, 734.429.8002) should be contacted when parents have questions about instructional practices, student performance and achievement, materials or issues that cannot be resolved at the building level.
- The Office of Special Education (Neal Elyakin, Director, 734.429.8006) should be the secondary point of contact for parents needing assistance regarding special education issues that cannot be resolved at the building level. General questions regarding special education programs may be addressed at the building level or to the Director of Special Education. All legal matters regarding special education will be addressed by the Office of Special Education.
- The Community Education Department (Scot Graden, Director, 734.429-8023) should be contacted for questions related to pre-school programs, Latchkey, recreation, after-school enrichment, facility rentals, aquatics, and cultural arts programs.
- The Office of Administrative Services (Tom Wall, Assistant Superintendent, 734.429.8004) should be the initial point of contact with questions related to District finances, purchasing practices, or other matters related to budget, finance, or general operations.
- The Transportation Department (Cyndi McLennan, Director, 734.429.8066) should be contacted for questions about District transportation services, including school bus routes and placement of bus stops.
- The Food Service Department (Julie Harsh, Director, 734.429.8045) should be contacted for any questions related to our school lunch program, catering, or other food service matters.
- The Facilities Department (Doug Bacon, Director, 734.429.8007) should be contacted for questions about buildings and grounds and operations.
- The Human Resources/Personnel Department (Ann Callan, Director, 734.429.8008) should be contacted for questions related to personnel matters, employment opportunities, benefits, and labor relations.
- The Office of the Superintendent (Scot Graden, 734.429.8000, Ext. 2003) should be contacted initially when questions or concerns exist relative to District policies or procedures and their application, general District questions or concerns, Board of Education meetings and agendas, or other matters related to District operations that are not identified within the general role descriptions delineated above.
- Board of Education members (SASBoE@salineschools.com) may be contacted when questions or concerns exist relative to District policies, procedures, practices, programs, operations, Board actions, or other matters related to governance. Each member of the Board will receive a copy of the email but are unable to respond via email to any email message (per Board Policy 4407). If a community member would like to receive a call from the Board President or designee, a telephone number should be provided.
