Saline High School Annual Education Report (AER) Cover Letter

August 15, 2011

Dear Parents and Community Members:

We are pleased to present you with the Annual Education Report (AER) which provides key information on the 2010-11 educational progress for Saline High School.   The AER addresses the complex reporting information required by federal and state laws. The school’s report contains information about Student Assessment, Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), Teacher Quality, and NAEP Data. If you have any questions about the AER, please contact Ben Williams for assistance.

The AER is available for you to review electronically by visiting the following web site http://hs.salineschools.com/ or you may review a copy from your school’s office.

For 2010-11, Saline High School made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in English language arts, but did not meet AYP in mathematics.  Saline High School did not make AYP because we did not meet adequate progress, as defined by No Child Left Behind, in the sub-section of “special education” in the area of “mathematics.” In short, we needed 67% of our special education students to be deemed proficient on either the MI Access or MME tests that were administered in the Spring of 2011. Only 55% of our special educations students were deemed proficient in mathematics. We will work diligently to target this particular sub-group of students with the aim of better results in the following school year. While we are disappointed in this particular result, we are still very pleased with our overall MME results where 86% of our students were proficient in math and 82% of our students were proficient in mathematics.

We appreciate the continued support of parents, staff and our community in this effort.

State law requires that we also report additional information.

  1. PROCESS FOR ASSIGNING PUPILS TO THE SCHOOL
  2. THE STATUS OF THE 3-5 YEAR SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN
  3. A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF EACH SPECIALIZED SCHOOL
  4. IDENTIFY HOW TO ACCESS A COPY OF THE CORE CURRICULUM, A DESCRIPTION OF ITS IMPLEMENTATION AND AN EXPLANATION OF THE VARIANCES FROM THE STATE’S MODEL
  5. THE AGGREGATE STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT RESULTS FOR ANY LOCAL COMPETENCY TESTS OR NATIONALLY NORMED ACHIEVEMENT TESTS. VIEW NWEA SCORES AND THE NORMATIVE DATA CHART.
  6. IDENTIFY THE NUMBER AND PERCENT OF STUDENTS REPRESENTED BY PARENTS AT PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES
  7. FOR HIGH SCHOOLS ONLY ALSO REPORT ON THE FOLLOWING:
    1. THE NUMBER AND PERCENT OF POSTSECONDARY ENROLLMENTS (DUAL ENROLLMENT)
    2. THE NUMBER OF COLLEGE EQUIVALENT COURSES OFFERED (AP/IB)
    3. THE NUMBER AND PERCENTAGE OF STUDENTS ENROLLED IN COLLEGE EQUIVALENT COURSES (AP/IB)
    4. THE NUMBER AND PERCENTAGE OF STUDENTS RECEIVING A SCORE LEADING TO COLLEGE CREDIT

We are very proud of our school’s performance on this recent annual education report.  We are actively targeting our AYP mathematics deficit in the area of Special Education by increasing our co-teaching support in designated mathematics classes, as well as offering an elective ACT prep class to assist with test taking skills.  We are especially proud that our ACT composite score has risen to a lofty 24.7, our highest composite score in school history.  Our goal continues to keep student learning at the forefront of everything we do at Saline High School.

Sincerely,

Ben Williams
