Curriculum

As a graduation requirment for the State of Michigan students must complete one credit in Physical Education/Health during their time in high school.

Saline Area Schools utilizes the Michigan Deptartment of Education Michigan Merit Curriculum for the guidelines on the content of this class. To view the the Credit Guidlines please click here.

"The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has identified the risk behaviors that have the greaest effect on the short-term and long-term health of young people. Patterns of unhealthy eating, physical inactivity, and tobacco use are often established in childhood and adolescence, and are by far the leading casues of death among adults."

From the Michigan Merit Curriculum Credit Guidelines

I hope to tailor the curriculum to address these issues in a fashion that will give these young people the tools they need to live a long productive life in society.

"Each year approximately three million cases of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) occur among teenagers,..."

From the Michigan Merit Curriculum Credit Guidlines

Saline Area Schools has chosen to address this issue by including an abstinence-based unit on HIV, STIs and Reproductive health. If you do not wish your child to participate in this unit you are give the option to opt out of this section of Health Education. Many people have strong opinions about what materials should be included in this section, so in compliances with State law, a copy of all materials is housed at the Board of Education office for your review.

Biographical Information

My name is Michael Dice and I am extremely excited to be the Health education and Physical Education teacher here at Saline High School. I come to Saline with an extensive and varied background, which makes me ideally suited to be the Health/Physical Education teacher.

I attained my Bachelors of Science degree in Physical Education and Exercise Science from Michigan State University. I then went on to attain my Masters of Science degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Exercise Physiology from Indiana University. From there I went on to work in the health care field for six years. My first three years I worked as an Exercise Physiologist in Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation. I then worked for three years as an Exercise Physiologist in Orthopedics. While these experiences were wonderful they were not what I wanted to do as a life career. It was then that I decided to return to school and finish the part of my education to become a certified teacher. I attended Eastern Michigan University and finished with my teacher education certifications in the areas of Physical Education and Health Education.

I then worked for five years as the Physical Education teacher at Houghton Elementary, a truly wonderful experience that I will always remember fondly.
