Mrs. Franzel
English – Room c209
1st Block

Welcome!  In this class, you will be engaged in language arts activities to help strengthen your reading and writing.  Included in this class will be vocabulary and grammar assignments.  We will also be responding to several works of literature.  The skills that are practiced in this class are skills that are useful in all other content areas and therefore I may be available to assist with assignments from other classes as well.

Needed for this class…

  1. 1 spiral 70 count notebook
  2. 1 two pocket folder

Bell Work
When the bell rings, class is to begin immediately.  I will have for you each day an assignment or a journal prompt to respond to.  You are to begin this as soon as the bell rings.  You are welcome to “free write” in journal rather than use the prompt unless otherwise directed.  This is also a good time to speak to me about any issues or questions you may have about previous assignments, grades or outside class work.

Planners
I require that a planner be used in my class and encourage it be used for all of your classes.  Before the end of the period, I will check planners to see that they are filled out for the day.  If you have lost your planner that was issued to you at the beginning of the year, you may purchase a new one in the office or use “planner sheets” which I will provide for you on a weekly basis.

Reading Log
I require 15 minutes of independent reading outside of class at least four times per week.  You will be given a log where you can track what you have read.  I will occasionally request that you change genres.  For example, I may ask you to read some non-fiction sometime during the week rather than fiction.  I am also available to help and assist you in finding reading materials that are of interest to you and are at your reading level.

Grading

  1. Planners – 5%
  2. Reading Log - 5%
  3. Classroom assignments and quizzes – 90%
  4. There will also be a final project and examination at the end of the semester.  Details will be provided when finals are approaching near the end of the semester.

Special Reminders
I expect students to be engaged in learning when in class.  What this means is that you should be paying attention and working on assignments throughout the class period.  I will monitor this and there seems to be a problem, consequences may follow.

Water is only allowed.  No food unless a prior arrangement has been made.

The school code of conduct must be followed at all times.

I am glad to meet all of you and I look forward to sharing a great semester with you.  If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to see me during the beginning of class or after school or during my planning period which is 2nd block.
