5th Grade Band Information for Fall 2005-2006

Students coming into 5th grade will begin a 7-week rotation in August which guides them through an extensive view of each music program offered at Heritage: Band, Orchestra, and Creative Arts. During the 2nd week of October, students will be asked to select the music class they will participate in for the rest of the school year.

This orientation is more thorough than any overview we have done in the past. Please encourage students to be open-minded to all areas during this rotation. Parents are asked to not purchase or rent any instruments until the appropriate time in October. Students will have an opportunity to try and be fitted to instruments during their time in the band & orchestra rotations. Further information will come home with students about instrument selection in the fall.

Class Preparation

5th Grade band students are expected to practice approx. 15 minutes at home every day. Students are still getting familiar with assembling instruments properly, setting up their embouchure, fingerings, as well as reading notes and rhythms. It may take some students more than 15 minutes to do this. Practice journals are due in band class each week for all students. Mrs. Hayes' class will turn in practice journals every Wednesday in class. Students must practice 90 per week to get an "A" on each journal assignment.

Important dates for 2005-2006

Fifth grade band members perform on 3 concerts during the school year. Please check back for further information and specific dates in the fall 2005.

Additional Items

Practicing is very important for students to develop the skills that will help them be successful. Please encourage your student to practice daily at home. Provide students with a quiet place to practice and occassionally ask them to play for you. Consider private lessons to help your student develop at their own pace (a list of private instructors is available on the main webpage by clicking on"List of Private Teachers").
